My follow-up thoughts on the previous post after having attended prom.
So in the end, I did go to prom, and I did wear a suit jacket. (If there's a more exact term for what it's called, I don't know it; I don't claim to be an expert on anything remotely related to fashion.) I went with a group of friends and I think only one of us had an official date. To my knowledge, I was the only suit-wearing female in attendance. Even the most tom-boyish girls I know wore dresses. So at first I was a bit concerned about sticking out (I do not enjoy being the center of attention and never wanted birthday parties growing up), but it ended up all right. I actually got several comments on it, which was rather pleasant.
A few of the comments I recieved:
"You look fantastic!"
"You look kinda like Tegan and Sara- it suits you." (No pun intended.)
"[That suit is] sexy." To which I mumbled an incredibly awkward thanks.
I did get a few funny looks, but no one said or did anything that was outright negative. Some of the more "plastic-y" girls (please excuse the Mean Girls reference) from my soccer team threw some quizzical glances my way, but those were people I can without any hesitance say I don't give a damn about. Besides, after graduation, I don't have to talk to any of them ever again if I choose not to.
A few days later we were signing one another's yearbooks, and a few more comments popped up. Someone wrote, "You rocked that suit!" and "I was amazed at how well you looked the other night." So while I still felt periodically awkward throughout the entire night of prom, I think it was good to challenge myself. (I even did a bit of dancing, which is something I generally refuse to partake in.)
